A name from a kabuki drum
The first-voice drum
Hatsune no Tsuzumi
The shop takes its name from the magic drum — Hatsune no Tsuzumi — of the kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura. A fitting name, our predecessor used to say, for a side street in Ningyōchō, the old district of puppet-makers and theaters.
The shop takes its name from Hatsune no Tsuzumi, the magic drum from the kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura — a fitting borrowing for a side street in Ningyōchō, the old district of puppet-makers and theaters. Since 1837 — through Tenpō, Meiji, Taishō, Shōwa, Heisei and Reiwa — the same corner, the same agar, the same slow afternoons.
The kanten agar is domestic. The azuki and the kuromitsu we make fresh every morning, sparing no labor. The gyūhi is hand-made — please eat it while it is still soft.
